#ThreeTips: Welcoming a Returning Mom

Life is such a wonderful miracle, but it is also a new and challenging season for parents everywhere. Aside from the physical recovery a woman must go through after giving birth, her mental state changes as well. I recently came back to work after being on maternity leave during the summer. Here are some things Holistic has done for me that I know more expecting/new moms would appreciate from their organization when thinking about returning to work.

  1. Make accommodations prior to her return. This is not something you want to look for the day she returns. Having a private space for moms to pump if they’re nursing is key (and a law!) You don’t need to have a spa-like room for her but make sure this room has the basics such as an outlet, a comfy chair, a table, and a place to store her expressed milk. If you want to go the extra mile, add a photo of her new baby, the benefits behind this small act go a long way!

  2. Be considerate. It is no secret that children change our lives dramatically -- from sleep schedules to leaving the house, nothing is the same after welcoming a new baby. Keep this in mind when welcoming a new mom back into the office. If you don’t already, consider offering benefits that can ease the stress and tension of being a working mom whether it involves childcare, flexible work schedules, etc.

  3. Include her and let her know she is valued. Don’t alienate a new mom. No matter how long she was out of the office for, make her feel like she still has a place and a voice in the office. Ask for her opinion in a meeting or include her in a special project and do so intentionally. Research suggests that moms are more productive as a group, so trust me, you want to hear her opinions and thoughts.

As a mom of two boys, I can tell you that I was facing mom-guilt at the thought of leaving them behind to return to work. However, Holistic has made it easier for me to get back into the game and still feel like I’m doing the best as I can for my family. Working moms everywhere appreciate even the smallest gesture from their peers and bosses.
