Who's Doing it Well? Lever for Change Saying Equality Can't Wait

One of the most frequent questions we receive — and try and answer at Holistic — is “Who is doing it well?” It’s always been really informative to hear the good ideas others have. After all, as we say, there’s no IP in inclusion. This feature will highlight creative ideas from other companies. Check out the whole list here or submit your own suggestion below.

In a time when racial, gender, and income inequalities are at the forefront of workplace discrimination, here is a challenge to tackle these inequalities head-on.

TL/DR;: Melinda Gates and MacKenzie Bezos are instituting a competition for organizations to combat gender inequality.

  • Who?: Melinda Gates and MacKenzie Bezos, two of the world’s wealthiest women, along with Lever for Change as the manager and Pivotal Ventures as the donor.

  • What’s the big idea 💡: The two women organized the Equality Can't Wait Challenge, a competition for $30 million to expand women’s power and influence in the United States by 2030. They will reward the money to organizations, or coalitions of organizations, who come up with brilliant ideas to close the gap of gender equality.

  • Why it works: Gates and Bezos are looking to tackle systemic barriers--sexual harassment, lack of data regarding equity, and underrepresentation in the workforce----to get to the root of gender inequality. They are fighting against the systems put in place to discriminate against women in a way that will inspire meaningful, lasting change.

Having two of the most wealthy, powerful, and influential women at the forefront of this project is no coincidence; Gates and Bezos are serving as role models to women everywhere to promote the leadership of women in business. Women in power working to build up other women aims to  break the glass ceiling.

  • (Not so) Hidden Value: Gates and Bezos are heavily promoting intersectionality in leadership; fighting against the oppression of LGBTQ+ women & women of color will solve more problems than just ones in the workplace. The more equality this can bring in the workplace, the more equality it will bring to the country.
