#ThreeTips: Unique Employee Benefits

In collaboration with Adam Perry of Iron Galaxy.

In recent years employee benefits have gotten a lot of buzz as more and more companies are diversifying their portfolios beyond health, vision, and dental -- think student loans and repayment. Devising creative ways to retain employees is just another example of how companies are competing for top talent. Offering unique benefits reflects the impact they have on the overall employee experience. Having great benefits is not only an awesome to reward and retain your employees, but if you market them properly, they can help you attract great talent. Don’t under-estimate the power of benefits to make an impact on your employer brand. When it comes to providing relevant benefits, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Know your audience. What stage of life is your average employee in? Have options that fit well with single employees as well as those with families/dependents. Take the time to educate your employees on their options so they can take advantage of those offerings. Holistic can help calculate this.

  2. Have a simple, well-designed overview of benefits (and costs) to send out to candidates during the interview process. Make it really easy for candidates to see your benefits as another selling point for accepting your job offer. A one-pager, basically.

  3. Conduct benchmarking. Know where your benefit offerings stand vs. the market on factors such as a variety of options, employer cost-share, and total investment. Share that information with employees so they can see that, as a company, you’re putting your money where your mouth is in terms of employee well-being.
